Hot Water Charlestown

Charlestown Plumbing Co repairs, replaces and installs hot water systems in Charlestown and the suburbs nearby. Storage tanks, continuous-flow gas units, heat pumps and solar are all work we take on, priced in full before anything starts, with a temporary tank while any new unit is on order.

Other plumbing and gas jobs sit with Charlestown Plumbing Co on the home page, and a tank that has burst overnight goes to our emergency plumbers.

Should you repair the unit or replace it?

This is the decision almost every hot water job comes down to, and these signs point one way or the other:

  • Repair usually makes sense when the fault is a single part: a failed element, a stuffed thermostat, a leaking valve or a tripped relief valve on an otherwise sound tank.
  • Replacement is the smarter spend when rust has taken hold of the cylinder, the tank is past a decade old, or repairs are starting to arrive one after the other.
  • Rusty water from the hot tap means the inside of the tank is wasting away, and no part swap fixes that.
  • A tank that suddenly goes loud is often sediment cooking on the element, which can be flushed, but on an old unit it usually signals the end is near.

We give you both prices where the call is genuinely close, so the choice is yours with the real numbers in front of you.

Electric storage and instant units

Electric storage tanks are the default in most of the postwar brick-veneer houses around here. They fail in familiar ways:

  • Elements, thermostats and valves, all repairable on the spot.
  • The cylinder itself, which no repair saves.

Instant electric units heat water as it flows, so there is no tank to rust out. They suit units and small homes where the cupboard space is tight, though the circuit that feeds one is wiring work outside our licence.

Gas storage and continuous flow

Gas storage tanks work like electric ones but burn gas instead

One practical bonus on this ridge: they keep going through a power outage, which matters when a summer storm takes the street's power out.

Continuous-flow gas units never store anything

They fire up when a tap opens and run for as long as the gas does, which makes them popular in units and larger households where back-to-back showers are the norm. Because our licence covers gas fitting, the gas line, the unit and the pressure test all come under the one quote.

Charlestown Hot Water Services

Every system type above gets repaired, replaced or newly installed, and one has its own page. A heat pump draws its heat from the air around the unit rather than making it with an element, so the tank runs on a fraction of the power. The heat pump hot water page covers the changeover and when one beats a straight tank swap.

Solar hot water

Solar systems use roof collectors with either a tank on the roof or one at ground level, and they pair well with the electric or gas booster that carries them through overcast stretches. With area-level install counts above 1,400 for solar hot water, plenty of local roofs already carry them, and repairs to existing systems are just as common as new installs.

Tanks under stairs and behind bungalows

The mid-century belt is due its second round of swaps

The postwar streets around the town centre had their hot water units swapped en masse through the 1990s and 2000s, and those tanks are now finishing together. June and July bring the failures, because the ridge gets colder, windier winters than the lower suburbs, and a tired element gives up on the first properly cold morning.

Access shapes the job more than the tank does

Storage units here are tucked under staircases, inside laundry cupboards and behind bungalows, and a swap in a tight unit courtyard near Charlestown Square means booking building access first and carrying the old tank past other residents' cars. We quote those complications up front instead of finding them on the day.

Old supply lines can drag a good tank down

Houses near Ida and Pearson that have never been renovated still run their original galvanised supply pipes, and a narrowed line chokes the flow into a healthy new unit, so we check it before any swap.

What Sets a Hot Water Price?

"They looked after an issue with the hot water system for us. It turned out that the unit was faulty. To ensure hot water, they immediately replaced the unit with a temporary one." Martin

So the number you agree to is the number on the invoice, which matters most on a replacement you are choosing rather than a burst you are stuck with. It starts with the system you choose:

  • The system itself Swapping one tank for the same again costs a different figure to changing fuel types or moving to a heat pump.
  • Access A tank on an open side path comes out faster than one bolted under a staircase or wedged behind a laundry wall.
  • Parts on the day Elements, valves and thermostats travel with us; a full cylinder gets ordered once you have approved the figure.
  • After-hours work A 2am callout is charged at the after-hours rate, named on the phone before we set out.

What happens once you ring

  1. 01

    Ring or send the form

Call (02) 4063 3469 or use the form to explain the fault. We ask enough to bring the right equipment the first time.

  2. 02

    A fixed price first

A plumber inspects the job and names a fixed figure up front. Nothing gets started until you give the go-ahead.

  3. 03

    The work on the day

For a repair we test the element, valve or thermostat and fit the replacement part; for a swap we drain the old unit, carry it out and plumb the new one in.

  4. 04

    Covered for a year

Every job carries our 365-day warranty on all work. If something we did isn't right, ring the same number.

When we're not the right call

A switchboard upgrade or a new circuit for an instant electric unit goes to an electrician, and our quote covers the plumbing half only. If your gas bill points to a meter fault, that sits with the gas network, not with us.

Hot water questions we hear

How long should a storage tank last in a Charlestown home?

It depends on the water, the anode and how hard the tank works, but rust through the cylinder is the end point for any of them. The units fitted during the big replacement wave of the 1990s and 2000s are reaching it now. Once rust is eating the cylinder, a repair only buys months.

Can you supply a temporary tank while the new system is on order?

Yes. If your replacement has to be ordered in, we can fit a temporary hot water tank so showers keep running until the new unit lands. It is a short-term arrangement and we take it out when the new system goes in.

Is a heat pump worth it on the ridge here?

They suit the area well. Area-level install counts put more than 1,500 heat pump systems in across the wider district, and the cooler ridge winters make the running savings more noticeable than on the coast. The heat pump page explains the technology and what a changeover involves.

Do you handle gas hot water as well as electric?

Yes. We're licensed gas fitters too, so a gas tank or continuous-flow unit is quoted, connected and pressure tested by the same plumber who does the water side.
