What a gas fitter actually does

Gas work is a licensed trade of its own, and ours sits on the same ticket as the plumbing. The jobs that need us include:

  • New gas points and line extensions for heaters, cooktops, ovens and outdoor barbecues
  • Appliance installs, plus swapping an appliance between LPG and natural gas
  • Leak detection and repair on pipes, regulators and connections
  • Gas hot water repairs and replacements, which the hot water page takes further
  • Capping the line when an old appliance comes out

When does a job need a licence?

Anything that touches gas needs one. Connecting a cooktop, moving a heater point, swapping a regulator or capping an unused line all legally require the licence, and the finished work has to be certified.

That certification matters more than people expect. Strata managers ask for it, insurers ask for it, and it is the record that says the line was pressure tested and passed. We leave it with you when the job closes.

Charlestown Gas Fitting Services

Putting something in

The install side covers cooktops, ovens, space heaters, pool heaters and barbecues, connected, converted and signed off, with new points run where the old ones never reached. See gas appliance installation.

Fixing something fitted

The detection side starts with a smell in the house, a hissing regulator or a bill climbing without explanation. We find the fault with gas detectors, repair the line and test before the gas goes back on. See gas leak detection.

What Sets the Price of Gas Work?

Line length comes first, then what the new pipe joins onto:

  • How far the new line has to run, and whether it travels under a driveway, a deck or a planted garden bed
  • Whether the existing pipe is copper, galvanised or polyethylene, since joining onto old steel costs more than running fresh pipe
  • The appliance itself, its location and the access to it
  • After-hours attendance, charged at its own rate and quoted before booking

Old heaters and the ridge winter

Ridge winters put heaters to work

Charlestown sits on a ridgeline at roughly 116 m, and winters up here run cooler and windier than in the coastal suburbs around it. Any gas heater in the postwar brick-veneer streets along Charlestown Road works hardest in June, and that is when a tired joint or regulator gives itself away.

Older lines behave like older water pipes

A line that has sat unused since summer can weep at a joint the first time the heater fires, and a corroded regulator shows itself the same way. The fix is usually small, a joint or a short section of pipe, but finding it takes the gas detectors.

When we're not the right call

A new power circuit or an electrical fault in an appliance is wiring work for an electrician; we price the gas connection alone. A smell at the street meter or on the network side of the connection goes to the gas network's emergency line first, before any call to us.

Questions Locals Ask About Gas

Do I need a licensed gas fitter to connect a new cooktop?

Yes. Any work that touches a gas line, from a cooktop swap to a new heater point, has to be done by a licensed gas fitter and certified once it is finished. We hold that ticket, do the install, run the pressure test and leave you the compliance paperwork your strata manager or insurer may request.

Can you convert my old heater from bottled gas to natural gas?

Often, yes. Converting an older heater from LPG to mains gas usually means changing jets and regulators, then testing. Some units are past conversion and the money is better spent on a new one, so the answer comes before the quote.

Who do I ring if I can smell gas outside the house?

The gas network handles a smell at the meter or from the street main, and their emergency line is the first call. If the smell is strongest indoors, leave switches alone, open the windows, then ring us from outside. Our gas leak page steps through who to call and when.

Is gas hot water work you handle too?

It is. We repair and replace storage tanks and instantaneous gas units, and every new connection is pressure tested before it goes back into use. The hot water page covers the repair-or-replace decision and the system types in detail.
