Tree roots exposed around a pipe in a trench

Why roots get in here

Roots chase moisture, and an old clay joint leaks it into the surrounding soil like a beacon. Once a fine root threads through, it thickens year after year until the pipe is choked.

The 1959 sewer program

Sewerage arrived in one rollout, so the earthenware house drains for the entire suburb went into the ground at once and has aged together ever since.

Mature street trees

The shade trees planted along those postwar streets are now big, and their roots spread right over the clay joints.

Reactive clay soil

Ground that heaves in wet weather and settles in dry works the old joints out of line, opening gaps roots can exploit.

Fine feeder roots first

Early intrusions just slow the drain. The heavy blockage comes years later, when the root mass has matured.

How we clear and repair the line

Confirm where the roots sit

A CCTV drain inspection records the line first, so we know how long the root mass is and which joints are involved before anything is cut.

Cut the mass back

Mechanical cutters or the jetter shear the roots away, and we keep going until the bore is open again.

Film it again

The camera goes back in to show whether the clay is intact or the entry points are still open, and you see the footage either way.

Deal with the cause

Where the joints are cracked, pipe relining seals the run from inside, leaving roots no gap to regrow through.

What drives the price on a root job?

The quote depends on how much root there is and what condition the clay is in underneath it.

It costs nothing to get us out to your door (excluding after-hours).

  • The length of the root mass and how thick it has grown
  • Whether the pipe is sound enough to clear, or cracked badly enough to need a liner
  • Where the access points are, and how much gear has to come through them
  • The after-hours rate, if the drain is backing up at night

Why do the same streets block up again?

The older blocks carry the worst of it

Houses in the postwar streets around the town centre drain into the 1959 clay lines, and the street trees along those runs now have roots spreading through the soil around each joint. On older blocks off Pearson Street, a root mass can keep growing until the house drain is fully choked.

Clearing alone leaves the gap open

The reactive clay underneath nudges the joints further out of line with every wet and dry spell. Cutting the roots without sealing the pipe leaves the same opening for next winter, which is why we film after the cut and price the permanent fix alongside it.

When We're Not the Right Call

If the camera shows a broken, caved-in pipe, cutting roots won't bring it back, and the fix is excavating and replacing that length. If the blockage turns out to be grease or silt rather than roots, drain jetting is the better tool. You get that answer from the footage before any money is spent.

What locals ask about root work

Why do roots keep finding these old sewers?

The suburb was sewered in 1959 with earthenware pipes, and the street trees planted since have grown roots long enough to reach the joints in that clay. A root slips through the smallest gap, then thickens every season until the pipe chokes.

Will the roots grow back after you clear them?

They can, if the joint they came through stays open. That is why we film the line after cutting. If the footage shows damage, relining seals the pipe and leaves the roots no gap to grip.

Do you cut the tree down or remove it?

No. We clear the roots from the pipe and repair the pipe itself. If a tree on your nature strip needs attention, that is a matter for the council.
